Of course, for small business and corporate customers, we'll continue to ship Windows XP. Quad core processors further those performance improvements. One of the key enhancements to Windows Vista is the Aero interface. Aero is the new graphical interface that uses sophisticated 3D graphics to make it easier for you to view, find, and manage information.
To enable some of the visual enhancements that Aero will provide, there are some things to consider regarding graphics and system memory. To simplify the analysis, I will focus on memory utilization. Lower numbers are better here because it means you will have more system resources available for common, routine activities.
So what does this mean? Fundamentally, Microsoft has created an operating system that scales with the hardware and requires much more from the PC to drive the new functionality and scenarios it delivers versus previous versions of the operating system. Windows Vista includes a performance rating system, which may puzzle you at first.
The higher the number is, the better the performance. As you can see in Figure , the individual components of this PC rate relatively high, from a 5 the top rating to a 3. So why is the overall system rating a 3.
Windows Vista automatically takes the lowest component rating and uses that as the overall system rating. The visual style of Windows Vista helps streamline the computing experience by refining common window elements so users can better focus on the content on the screen rather than on how to access it.
The desktop experience is more informative, intuitive, and helpful. New tools bring better clarity to the information on the computer, allowing users to see what their files contain without opening them, find applications and files instantly, navigate efficiently among open windows, and use wizards and dialog boxes with added confidence. Figure 1. As noted previously, each level of user experience builds on the features of the previous version and is dependent on the Windows Vista version and the computer's hardware.
