If you understand how they all work together , it's easier to plan for how your project's dates will be impacted. Here are a few more articles you might find helpful in building a more accurate picture of the working and nonworking days in your organization.

Click the Non-working time tab, and then select a color and a pattern to represent nonworking time in the Gantt Chart view. In the Create New Base Calendar dialog box, type of name for the new calendar and then choose whether you want to create a new base calendar or make a calendar that is based on a copy of an existing calendar.
Double-click on a resource. At the 'Resource Information' dialogue you can see the 'Base Calendar' option. You can leave that option unchanged or change it to any other calendar ProjectLibre's or your own. After changing that option, if you click on the button on the right you can make further customizations. In the latst version, there is a globe icon in the top right corner. When you select the Globe you open a dialog box where you can set the Language and Country.
The Country has default settings for the Currency and Date formats. You cannot hide the display of Saturday and Sunday in the Gantt chart view.
You can show a "5 day" week in the Calendar view. Although Mark is right you can try a work around by setting the non-working days color to the same color of the working days.
By default this means to set it to white. Press the Calendar drop-down list and select the 24 Hours calendar and then press the OK button. Select the Non-Working time tab, and press the Calendar drop-down list and select the 24 Hours calendar.
Next press the OK button. Project calendars are about working days, shifts, and times, while resource calendars are about the availability of resources for your project.
These two calendars should be updated continuously. A resource calendar is a calendar that specifies working and nonworking time for an individual resource. A resource calendar differs from a base calendar, which specifies working and nonworking time for more than one resource.
Right-click the resource and choose Information. On the General tab, under Resource Availability, set the dates for when the resource has limited availability, and then set a percent of the resource's time that will be available for your project Units. Click OK. Project takes the exception days and times into account when it schedules project work for any project that uses that calendar.
When you copy a calendar from one file to another, the exceptions and work weeks for the calendar copy over too. The details for a calendar exception specify whether exception days are nonworking or working days along with the work hours. The Exceptions tab appears. Enter the name, start date, and finish date as you would for a regular exception.
Recurring exceptions tend to span longer periods of time than exceptions for holidays or training classes. Click Details and specify the nonworking or working time settings for the days in the recurring exception. With a Project calendar exception, every day of the exception must use the same settings. Figure 2. For a recurring exception, you specify the recurring pattern as well as how long the pattern lasts. The frequency options include Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly.
The settings that appear depend on which frequency option you select. For example, the Weekly option has a checkbox for specifying the number of weeks between occurrences 1 represents every week, 2 represents every other week and checkboxes for the days of the week on which the event occurs.
The Monthly option has one option for specifying the day of the month, and another for specifying the week and day of the week like first Monday.
Suppose you want to carve out time from your project for a quarterly meeting every three months during the calendar year. Sometimes you want to specify a number of occurrences instead, which is in fact the easier way to schedule a specific number of meetings. If the Finish date you set on the Exceptions tab is too early to schedule all the occurrences, Project automatically changes it.
Whether you set dates or a number of occurrences, a recurring exception can repeat up to times. If your recurrence pattern results in 1, occurrences or more, Project displays a warning when you click OK.
